Anglo-Saxon royal charters pair a Latin dispositive text with an Old English boundary clause, and this conjecture reads the pairing as two proof regimes fossilized in one object. The Latin grant was proof-as-relic — its authority lay in being verbally unchanged — while the vernacular bounds were proof-as-performance, a script for physically walking the perimeter with neighbours, and living scripts get updated each time they are used. Later copyists should therefore modernize the language and place-name forms of the bounds at a far higher rate than the Latin body of the very same charters: text-critical drift as a fingerprint of which parts of the document were still alive. If this holds, linguistic layering in cartulary copies records how long oral-performative proof survived inside written instruments, estate by estate.

Primary clause: in Electronic Sawyer charters preserved in post-Conquest copies, the rate of linguistic modernization (post-Old-English spellings, updated toponym forms) per 100 words is at least 3x higher in boundary clauses than in the Latin dispositive sections of the same charters. Secondary clause: charters of estates with documented later boundary disputes show the highest bounds-modernization rates. Decidable charter by charter.
