This conjecture turns that rush into a gauge: confirmations as a share of chancery output should spike in the first three regnal years of essentially every reign, but the height and sharpness of the spike should scale with how contested the succession was, because insecurity of the crown converts directly into insecurity of everyone else's parchment. The chancery's intake queue thus records the realm's collective estimate of the new ruler's stability. If this holds, medieval successions can be scored for perceived legitimacy from paperwork alone — a legitimacy index with no chronicler standing between us and the anxiety.
