A genuine charter's content could survive perfectly well as a copy in a cartulary; a forgery's whole point was frequently the exhibitable object — venerable-looking script, an old seal — to be produced at an inquest or in court. This conjecture therefore claims the surviving stock of early 'original' single sheets is adversely selected: among charters of early purported date, forgeries should be overrepresented among single-sheet survivors relative to their share among cartulary-only texts, because houses curated their fakes as weapons while letting safe genuine rights live on as copies. The archive protected precisely what was fraudulent, since that was what needed the artifact. If this holds, the parchment relics in our great libraries oversample the forgers' portfolio, and object-based diplomatics has been trained disproportionately on the very material made to deceive it.
